Kansas City Chiefs would be perfect fit for Chris Harris in free agency

The Kansas City Chiefs are more than likely going to lose two of their best cornerbacks this offseason, but help could be on the way in the form of Chris Harris.

Kansas City Chiefs fans who also root for the Kansas Jayhawks are all too familiar with Chris Harris, as the cornerback played his college ball in Lawrence for the Orange Bowl winning team in 2008. He went on to spend his entire career up to this point with the Broncos, one of the Chiefs’ biggest rivals.

Well, after nine seasons in Denver, it’s looking like Harris won’t be returning to the team he’s spent nearly a decade with. Instead, he’ll hit the free agent market and while he isn’t the elite corner he once was, at age 30 (31 in June), Harris could be a great addition to the Chiefs secondary.

For one, he’s still got gas left in the tank and plenty of it at that. He started all 16 games for Denver a season ago and still has a respectable grade from Pro Football Focus. Harris won’t be the guy we all despised back when the Broncos had KC’s number, but he’s still a viable option for sure.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Secondly, the Chiefs need cornerback help this offseason (stop me if you’ve heard that one the last five years). Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller are going to get expensive contracts that will be out of KC’s price range, paving way for both of them to leave in free agency and the Chiefs being left with Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton as their go-to corners.

Ward and Fenton did well in 2019, but can they handle the load all their own? The answer is probably not, and that’s why signing Harris could make a ton of sense here.

Last, but certainly not least, it appears that Chris Harris WANTS to come to Kansas City. As mentioned earlier, he played college ball in Lawrence, which is less than an hour from KC and it’s also possible that Harris wants to be a part of a winning team again – something the Broncos haven’t been since they won the Super Bowl in the 2015 season.

Jon Heath of Broncos Wire highlighted several occasions in which Harris showed he might be interested in joining his long-time team’s rival. A few of those instances were Harris merely retweeting a few tweets that linked him with Kansas City while another was his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show in January where he said it’d be a good fit for him.

With Harris turning 31 this summer, the Chiefs shouldn’t break the bank for him by any means, but if they gave him a one (or even two) year deal, it’d be hard to scoff at that. He’s still got some motor in him and with two key pieces of the secondary likely leaving this offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs are going to need some help at cornerback.

Would you be okay with the Chiefs bringing in Chris Harris next season?
