The Kansas City Chiefs have some difficult decisions to make this offseason, but one of the easier ones should be letting Demarcus Robinson walk in free agency.

Somehow it’s already been four years since the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Demarcus Robinson. Time flies, doesn’t it?

With four years passing by, that means Robinson is now heading into free agency at age 25 (he’ll turn 26 in September). While some fans might be clamoring for the Chiefs to keep Robinson in Kansas City, the team can’t fall into that trap.

“That trap” refers to the fact that Robinson really hasn’t been anything special during his time with the Chiefs. His best season came this past year where he hauled in 32 receptions for 449 yards and four touchdowns.

In total, Robinson finished his Chiefs tenure with 75 receptions for 949 yards and eight touchdowns. That production is not exactly worth the money that Robinson might command on the open market.

When you look at Robinson’s game log from this past season, there was only one game that stood out and we all know which game I’m referring to; It was the week two match-up against the Raiders in the Black Hole where Robinson went off with six catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

Deduct that game from his season totals and Robinson finished the year with just 277 yards and two touchdowns. Now ask yourself – Is that a player worth paying this offseason?

Yes, the Chiefs are going to be thin at the wide receiver position with both Robinson and Sammy Watkins‘ futures in doubt, but this year is considered to be the best wide receiver draft class maybe ever. Help could easily be found there and it’d cost significantly less than paying Robinson.

The Chiefs also have Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle (and if you’re really grasping for straws – Gehrig Dieter) for next year behind Tyreek Hill. Hardman, in his rookie year, barely played the receiver position and still finished the season with more yards and touchdowns than Robinson (538 yards, six touchdowns).

If you’re still wanting to keep Demarcus Robinson around, then I’m curious as to why. He’s going to get the Albert Wilson treatment on the open market, which is essentially if you caught passes from Patrick Mahomes, you earn more in free agency than what your production is worth.

Demarcus Robinson had some good moments with the Kansas City Chiefs, but football is a business. If the Chiefs are smart this offseason, then they can’t fall into the trap of keeping Robinson around simply because he was a part of the Super Bowl winning team. That’s what turns good teams into bad teams real fast.
