Kansas City Chiefs: Should Eric Bieniemy consider Colorado job?
By Cullen Jekel
If Eric Bieniemy doesn’t end up taking the Colorado job, then who should the Buffaloes target instead?
My personal preference would be for the Buffaloes to stay in-house, even if that’s just an interim solution. Guys like offensive coordinator Jay Johnson, defensive coordinator Tyson Summers, and assistant head coach Darrin Chiaverini should lead the way. The school was really left in a jam, and perhaps the best thing to do is give one of these guys the opportunity to see what he can do before reconvening at the start of the next carousel.

But if the administration wants a more permanent solution sooner, there are some recently ousted head coaches who could make sense. Chief among them: Butch Jones, the former Tennessee Volunteers head coach. He’s currently an offensive analyst–whatever the hell that is–with Alabama, but his name keeps popping up whenever there’s another head coach vacancy.
Recently fired Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich held the same position with Colorado between 2006-2008. He then left for Oregon, where he later became the head coach for four seasons, going 37-16. He’d be worth a call on the telly.
If Colorado wants a guy who’s familiar with the terrain, what about Mike Bobo? His tenure with Colorado State just ended, and while he went only 28-35, he did lead the Rams to three straight bowl games from 2015-2017. The former Georgia offensive coordinator now holds that same position with South Carolina.
It’s clear that the Colorado Buffaloes should prioritize Eric Bieniemy above all other choices. But it’s less clear how he should feel about them.
The one thing I keep coming back to: these opportunities don’t come around often, and may not come around again.
