The KC Chiefs will have a tough decision regarding what to do with free agent corners Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller. What are their values and what should the Chiefs pay? More importantly – Will they do it?

While Chris Jones dominates the discussion about future free agents for the Kansas City Chiefs, people are overlooking Bashaud Breeland and what exactly the Chiefs either will or should do with the veteran cornerback.

With a somewhat limited cap situation combined with uncertainty regarding Jones and the soon-to-be signed extension with Patrick Mahomes, what money will the organization have available?

Much in the spirit of what might Jones ask for from the Chiefs or in free agency, I look at what Breeland – along with fellow free agent defensive back Kendall Fuller – might ask for. Spoiler alert: It’s more than you think.

Determining the value of players that won’t be paid the top of market value is somewhat complicated. With that in mind, I chose players that signed shorter deals at older ages along with younger players with longer deals. Also, I included agreements that were reached recently or deals reached a few years ago.

I, as best I could, analyzed the following corners and the four years that led up to their new contract. I analyzed games played over those four seasons, along with season averages of interceptions, passes defensed, tackles, and pro football reference score.

The players I chose to include were: Justin Coleman, Bradley Roby, Prince Amukamara, Chris Harris, Marcus Peters, Xavier Rhodes, Kyle Fuller, Josh Norman, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Joe Haden, Malcolm Butler, and A.J. Bouye.

Next, let us take a look at how both Breeland and Fuller compare to this group.

What is the percentage? That’s either the increase or decrease in numbers of the specific players attributes compared to the average of the pool of players we are comparing. Now, let’s look at the contracts for the pool to provide a guide as we begin to establish market value.

So, based on the contracts of our pool of players, the average contract is at about three years at 11.604 million per season. When we compare Breeland and Fuller to these players, what does a contract look like?

Bashaud Breeland1.77%341.97813.99324.459
Kendall Fuller-25.53%332.85910.95318.091

As we read this, and obviously the years on a contract can vary, this chart and the data indicates Breeland could command a contract worth in upwards of $13.993 million per season on a new deal while Fuller could command $10.953 million.

Both numbers are high, so let’s compare the two against other free agent cornerbacks that will hit the market this year. I will also include Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was traded during the 2019 season for multiple first round picks from the Jaguars. He likely gets a new deal this year and is perhaps in line to be be the highest paid cornerback in football.

Now let’s take a look at how Breeland and Fuller compare to the group of free agent defensive backs

With these numbers, we’ll take a look at what we anticipate the value of the free agent group to be using the same formula we had before.

Finally, it’s time to take a look at what we’ve computed thus far. We have two values for each and all are on three-year contract calculations. We can take those two different calculations, find an average, and that should provide us a likely approximate value going forward for the two.

Breeland:

  • $13.993 million per season/ $24.459 million guaranteed
  • $12.26 million per season/ $20.35 million guaranteed

Fuller:

  • $10.953 million per season/ $18.091 million guaranteed
  • $9.435 million per season/ $15.664 million guaranteed

Final Breeland calculation:

  • $13.126 million per season/ $22.404 million guaranteed

Final Fuller calculation:

  • $10.194 million per season/ $16.877 million guaranteed

Chiefs fans, if you were in charge and to extend either of the defenders, would you be willing to do either of these contracts?
