KC Chiefs: 2010s best decade in Kansas City sports history

The KC Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship put a bow on what was undoubtedly the best decade in Kansas City sports history. It consisted of a Super Bowl championship, World Series title, and MLS Cup victory.
If you want to be picky, you can say the Kansas City Chiefs technically won the Super Bowl in 2020, but as far as the NFL was concerned, they won it for the 2019 season, so it still counts as a championship for the 2010s.
Anyway – When the 2010s began, Kansas City sports teams were bad. The Kansas City Wizards were in their final season under that name and finished off that franchise’s history with a record of 11-13-6, not exactly worth jumping through a wall for. It was Peter Vermes’ first year as the head coach though, which ended up being great for the club.
While the Kansas City Chiefs would go 10-6 and win the AFC West in 2010, the next two years brought a lot of hardships to the organization. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals were still irrelevant, which fans were more than used to by that point in time.

In 2013, all three teams achieved new levels of success:
- The Royals recorded their first winning season in a decade and the fans were officially buying stock in this team for the future.
- Sporting Kansas City won the MLS Cup in dramatic fashion – winning it on penalty kicks against Real Salt Lake on a cold, cold day in Kansas City.
- The Chiefs had hired Andy Reid to take over as their head coach and he turned them around from a 2-14 team to an 11-5 team in less than a year. They made it to the playoffs too, but we all know how that ended.
Sporting Kansas City was the first of the hometown teams to win a title, but the Royals weren’t far behind. After Justin Maxwell’s walk-off grand slam to end the home stand in 2013, the boys in blue went on amazing runs in both 2014 and 2015.
The 2014 season saw them go 8-0 in the postseason after their “you had to see it to believe it” win in the Wild Card game. They reached the World Series for the first time since 1985 and made it all the way to Game 7 before falling to the San Francisco Giants.
The next year, the Royals were out for blood and wound up winning the World Series in five games against the New York Mets. They had crazy wins over the Houston Astros in the ALDS and over the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS to reach their second straight World Series and only let the Mets take one game from them in that year’s fall classic.
Finally, we come to the Kansas City Chiefs, who had achieved success every year from 2013-2018, but just hadn’t gotten to the top quite yet. They came so close in the 2018 season, but an offsides call kept them out of the Super Bowl and left the fans saying “Better luck next year”. That they did.
The Chiefs made it back to the AFC title game and won it this time and from there, they won in dramatic fashion (is there any other way for Kansas City sports fans?). The Chiefs trailed in all three of their playoff games in the 2019 season, but won all three and at the end of the season, were hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
