Ryan McBroom (First Base/Left Fielder/Right Fielder)

  • 2019 stats – .293/.361/.360 with 5 doubles worth 0.3 WAR (95 wRC+)
  • 2019 AAA stats – .315/.402/.574 with 55 extra base hits (26 home runs) with 146 wRC+
  • 2020 Steamer projection – .255/.315/.409 with 23 extra base hits (9 home runs) worth 0.1 WAR (88 wRC+)

Ryan McBroom had a fantastic year in AAA for the New York Yankees before arriving in Kansas City late in the 2019 season. He slashed .315/.402/.574 with 55 extra base hits (26 home runs) in AAA before hitting .293/.361/.360 with five doubles with the Royals.

More from Kansas City Royals

McBroom is likely to find plate appearances as the right-handed platoon bat with Ryan O’Hearn at first base. He didn’t tap into any of his home run power at the major league level following his acquisition by the Royals, but there is every reason to believe he is capable hitting 10+ home runs a year (hit 15+ each year in minors from 2016 to 2019).

If McBroom finds his home run swing, build off his plate approach, and the contact ability he showed in 2019, then the Royals will need to cycle him into the line-up more often. McBroom is very likely to outperform his 2020 projections if he receives increased playing time at first base, left field, and right field.

The improvement and success of Lopez, O’Hearn, Phillips, and McBroom will be important for the Royals not only in 2020 but for 2021 and 2022. Each of these players bring the talent and ability to outperform their 2019 statistics. Their offseason work will be put to the test during spring training and Royals fans will be hopeful for each of them to unlock their potential.
