Sammy Watkins has been on fire in the playoffs during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs and if they want to win Super Bowl LIV, Watkins needs to continue that dominance.

When opposing defenses look to slow down the Kansas City Chiefs explosive offense, Sammy Watkins probably isn’t real high on their list of weapons to contain. Well, that mentality didn’t work out well for the Texans or Titans, who allowed Watkins to scorch them.

In two games this postseason, Watkins has hauled in nine receptions for 190 yards and a touchdown. He might have only had two receptions in the Divisional Round, but he made both of those catches count. He absolutely roasted the Titans to the tune of 114 yards and a touchdown and the Chiefs will need him to continue being this playmaker in Super Bowl LIV.

The Chiefs obviously have a slew of weapons capable of making any defense go crazy, but having that third passing threat could really put Kansas City over the top in this one and give them the edge over the 49ers. With Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce likely getting a lot of the Niners’ attention, Watkins should be able to get his.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Watkins led the team in receiving yards in the AFC Championship Game and his touchdown late in the game was essentially the play that sent the Chiefs to Miami. He’s been disappointing in both of his regular seasons with the Chiefs, but for whatever reason, he’s been able to turn it on during the playoffs.

Sammy Watkins made headlines on Thursday for stating that he wouldn’t be opposed to taking a pay cut for the 2020 season and that he also wouldn’t rule out taking the 2020 year off all together. A big game on Sunday would make it more likely that he could command more on the open market if he decided against taking a pay cut and the Chiefs wound up cutting him.

It’s hard to imagine the Chiefs would pay Watkins what he’s slated to make next year, especially since they’d be able to save $14 million and that could go toward paying Patrick Mahomes in the offseason.

If San Francisco is successfully able to take Hill and Kelce out of the game (slim chance of them being able to take away both of them), then it’ll be Watkins’ time to shine. If he’s able to go out there and put on a similar performance to that of which he did in the AFC title game and help the Chiefs get the win, Sammy Watkins will be a Kansas City Chiefs legend.
