Andy Reid will coach in his second Super Bowl this Sunday when his Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. A Super Bowl ring would be huge for Reid’s legacy.

Ask just about anyone associated with the NFL if Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is a Hall of Famer and they’ll likely respond with something like  – “If he wins a Super Bowl, no doubt”.

That’s why this weekend is so big for Reid and his legacy. He has the resumé to make it into the Hall of Fame; He’s sixth all-time in wins, has a .618 winning percentage in the regular season, and has won ten division titles between his two teams.

Despite all of the success, however, Andy Reid has never won the sport’s biggest game and that’s why a win over the 49ers on Sunday would make all the difference for the Chiefs head coach. It’d give him that Super Bowl victory he’s been searching for since he first got into the head coaching business in 1999 with the Philadelphia Eagles. That’s really all that’s missing from his storied career is a Super Bowl title.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

As long as Reid has been a part of the NFL, this is just his second Super Bowl appearance, the first coming back in 2004 when he was with the Eagles. It was Reid’s sixth year as the head coach in Philadelphia and his Eagles went 13-3, won the NFC, and eventually lost to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX by a score of 24-21.

At the time of that loss, many probably expected Reid and the Eagles to get back to the Super Bowl several times, but he never did while he was in Philadelphia. It took Reid four trips to the NFC title game to finally win the George Halas and advance to the Super Bowl, but after they finally broke the barrier, Philadelphia would go to the NFC Championship Game just one more time (2008 vs Arizona) before the Eagles moved on from Reid.

It’s taken Reid 16 years to make it back to the NFL’s biggest game and at 61 years old, the opportunities to win one are starting to run out. Fortunately, this is the best Chiefs team fans have seen in YEARS and it gives Reid his best chance to win a Super Bowl since that 2004 season when his Eagles came so close.

The Chiefs know all too well how big a Super Bowl win would be for Andy Reid. The players donned Hawaiian shirts on their flight to Miami to show support for their head coach and Dave Toub was quoted as saying “Nobody deserves it more than Andy”.

Winning a Super Bowl would obviously be awesome, but one of the better storylines surrounding it would be how Andy Reid finally won the big game. Reid has struggled in big games throughout his storied career, but winning Super Bowl LIV would not only shut the critics up, it’d make Reid a shoe-in to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Chances are that Reid is a Hall of Famer even if he never wins a ring, but winning one puts the debate to rest. With a win over the 49ers on Sunday night, Andy Reid have nothing left to prove; He’d undoubtedly be a Hall of Fame coach.
