Super Bowl LIV is one of the more evenly matched Super Bowls we’ve seen in a long time. The KC Chiefs are favored by one point and the reason they’re a one point favorite is because of Patrick Mahomes.

When comparing the Kansas City Chiefs roster to the San Francisco 49ers’ roster, several advantages go to the 49ers. The Niners have the better offensive line, defensive line, and better run game. If the Niners are better up front on both sides of the ball, then why are the Chiefs favored to win Super Bowl LIV?

Well, that’s easy. It’s because of Patrick Mahomes, who has completely turned this organization into a Super Bowl contender every year – something past Chiefs quarterbacks were unable to do.

The most important position on the football field is at quarterback and the Kansas City Chiefs most definitely have the edge there. This isn’t a knock on Jimmy Garoppolo, but NO ONE – not even the biggest San Francisco homer – would take him over Mahomes.

Mahomes has taken this Chiefs offense to a whole other level and whenever he’s on the field, the Chiefs have a shot to win the game. When KC was down 24-0 to the Texans in the Divisional Round, Mahomes gave his guys a pep talk and one quarter later, they were ahead 28-24.

More from Patrick Mahomes

If the 49ers were to get down 24-0 to a team, it’s highly unlikely that Jimmy G is going to be able to dig them out of that hole. He made some nice throws against the Saints and did a lot for the Niners in that game, but the 49ers aren’t in the Super Bowl because of Garoppolo’s six completions against the Packers; They’re in Miami because of their run game, which is aided by their stellar offensive line and they’e playing for the Lombardi Trophy because of their top notch defense.

This doesn’t mean the Chiefs will necessarily win the game, but it does mean that they’re going to be able to strike at any time due to how explosive Mahomes and this offense is. Taking a running back out of the game is doable by getting a large lead and forcing the opponent to throw (see what the Chiefs did to Tennessee in the AFC title game two weeks ago), but taking a quarterback out of it – especially one like Mahomes – is much trickier.

That’s what San Francisco will look to do this Sunday evening and it’s something that all NFL teams have tried to do and to this point, have failed miserably at.

If for whatever reason Mahomes was unable to play in Super Bowl LIV, the 49ers would go from being one point underdogs to heavy favorites. They’re the most complete team in the NFL, which in most years is enough to be the favorite in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for San Francisco, however, they don’t have Patrick Mahomes and that’s the key difference here.

The Chiefs have been the 49ers roster wise in years past and while it’s great to have a complete team, having a franchise quarterback is way better and it’s why the Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up to play in Super Bowl LIV.
