The Kansas City Chiefs will need every single player to step up next Sunday in Miami when they play the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. Damien Williams will be crucial in that game.

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs‘ rushing attack isn’t very lethal (ranked 23rd in the league when it comes to yards per carry), they’ll still need Damien Williams to have the game of his life this coming Sunday in Miami.

While Williams and the Chiefs run game hasn’t been all that effective this year, Williams has made a big difference since he returned to the lineup after recovering from his injury. He’s not just the RB1 on the team, but Andy Reid trusts him in the passing game too and that’s where he can make a huge difference next weekend.

Since Williams returned to the starting lineup in week 16, he’s had at least one touchdown whether it be rushing or receiving in every game’s played in. Here have been his stats:

More from Kansas City Chiefs

  • Week 16 at Bears – 16 carries for 65 yards; 3 receptions for 27 yards, TD
  • Week 17 vs Chargers – 12 carries for 124 yards, 2 TD; 4 receptions for 30 yards
  • Divisional Round vs Texans – 12 carries for 47 yards, 2 TD; 2 receptions for 21 yards, TD
  • Championship Game vs Titans – 17 carries for 45 yards, 2 TD; 5 receptions for 44 yards

Williams has had had a rushing touchdown in all but one of those games and in that one, he still found the end zone in the passing game. This proves that while the Chiefs run game isn’t anywhere close to being as explosive as San Francisco’s, the Niners are still going to have to game plan to stop Damien Williams because he’s been a touchdown machine since returning to the starting lineup.

The Divisional Round was some of Williams’ best work, as he totaled three touchdowns and was everywhere the Chiefs needed him to be on the field. The Chiefs don’t have the kind of run game that can just pound the rock and go for 200+ yards, but getting Williams involved in the offense both via the run and pass will be crucial in Super Bowl LIV.

Williams might not be a regular 100+ yard rusher, but he has shown he is capable of breaking off a big run every now and then and he’s due for one in the Super Bowl. Even if that doesn’t happen, the Chiefs will find ways to get the football in Williams’ hands because he can find the end zone in big moments and that’s obviously the end game here.

Expect Andy Reid and company to get Damien Williams heavily involved in the offensive game plan this Sunday, both in the run game and in the receiving game. When that’s happened and Williams has a big game, the Kansas City Chiefs have typically been victorious.
