Kansas City Chiefs: Sammy Watkins continues to deliver in playoffs
Kansas City Chiefs fans might not like that Sammy Watkins has swindled the team with his massive contract, but you have to give it to the guy – He’s been great in his four playoff games with the Chiefs.
After writing an article last week about how clutch Sammy Watkins has been throughout the playoffs during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, he continued to prove me right. On Sunday against the Titans in the AFC Championship Game, Watkins led the team in receiving yards with 114 off of seven catches. He also found the end zone for the first time since week one.
Oddly enough – Watkins also recorded 114 catches in last year’s AFC Championship Game, but he did that damage off of just four catches, but didn’t find the end zone.
The touchdown he had in this year’s AFC title game was in the fourth quarter with a little over seven minutes to go and it essentially iced the game. Watkins created separation and Patrick Mahomes floated that ball to him (off of his back leg – mind you) and Watkins made the rest of the magic happen.

It’s understandable for Chiefs fans to be frustrated with Watkins due to the invisibility act he’s pulled in the regular season the last two years. At the same time, these are the games you want Watkins to show up for.
If he’s going to live up to that massive contract he commanded before the 2018 season, this is the time for him to do so and he’s showcasing his talents to other teams should the Chiefs opt to move on from him after this season.
Here’s what Watkins has been able to do in four playoff games with the Kansas City Chiefs:
- Divisional Round vs Colts – 6 receptions for 62 yards
- AFC Championship vs Patriots – 4 receptions for 114 yards
- Divisional Round vs Texans – 2 receptions for 76 yards, 1 rush for 14 yards
- AFC Championship vs Titans – 7 receptions for 114 yards, 1 touchdown
The “knock” on Watkins in the playoffs prior to Sunday’s game was that he hadn’t found the end zone yet, but he did just that against Tennessee and it came at the absolute best time too. It was the first touchdown he had recorded since that crazy week one performance he had against Jacksonville.
The 49ers are going to try to take away Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill as options for Mahomes and that will most definitely open things up for Sammy Watkins to have yet another big game. For whatever reason, this guy has been able to turn on the jets during the playoffs and that’s when this team needs him the most.
Hopefully he can continue this reign of dominance and have a big game in Miami a week from Sunday!
