THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ARE SUPER BOWL BOUND! That’s the first time anyone has been able to say that in 50 years. Five decades of heartbreaking losses have finally led to this moment… The Chiefs are going to Super Bowl LIV.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried when the final seconds ticked off and the clock hit zero. I screamed my butt off when Frank Clark got the sack on Ryan Tannehill to end the Titans’ season and put the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. Even though those final few minutes went by FOREVER, this 2019 season felt different; It felt special.

Once the clock hit zero and the players came onto the field, the tears started to stream and they didn’t stop for several minutes. I, like a lot of other Chiefs fans, have gone my entire life without seeing the Chiefs in a Super Bowl, but that won’t be the case in two weeks. It didn’t feel like this team would be Super Bowl bound a few months ago though.

In week seven, the Chiefs faced the Broncos on Thursday Night Football and it looked like Patrick Mahomes was lost for the season due to injury. I remember thinking at the time that the season was over and it was a terrible feeling; A year after coming so close to reaching the Super Bowl was going to be ruined due to injury.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Instead – Mahomes missed just two games and Kansas City went 1-1 without him. They narrowly lost to the Packers and then went on to squeak by the Vikings on a last second field goal by Harrison Butker. Every win counts in the NFL and we all saw why a few months later (more on that in a bit).

After the Chiefs lost the Titans, it felt like this was going to be the “same ol’ Chiefs” who couldn’t get the job done when it mattered most. Well, after that loss, the Chiefs rattled off six straight wins to close out the season.

Just when it looked like they’d for sure be playing the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card round, the magic started to creep in. The Patriots lost to the Dolphins in week 17, granting the Chiefs the two-seed and ensuring they would have a week off before their next game.

When the Chiefs finally took the field again after their week 17 victory, they were getting beaten badly by the Texans. They were 24-0 and while some might not have felt good about the team’s chances, they shut those non-believers up quickly, scoring 28 points in the second quarter and 41 unanswered points.

When it’s your year, those are the kind of games you win. We saw it with the Royals and now we’re seeing it with the Chiefs.

The Titans put up a good fight on Sunday, but KC won by double digit points and are on their way to Miami for their first Super Bowl appearance in FIVE DECADES. It’s a surreal feeling, but I’m digging it.

This season has been special, now let’s go get that trophy!
