For the last two years, KC Chiefs fans have heard all about how offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will be getting a head coaching position in the NFL. Well, it looks like he might be staying with the Chiefs for one more season.

Once black Monday hits in the NFL, there’s always about six or seven NFL head coaching jobs available. Fortunately, the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t had to deal with that madness since 2012 when they went on to hire Andy Reid.

What Chiefs fans do have to “deal with”, however, is the possibility of one of their own coaching staff members leaving Kansas City to become a head coach for another team. We saw this happen with Doug Pederson in 2016 and again in 2018 with Matt Nagy.

While it didn’t happen for Eric Bieniemy last year, many thought this would be the year the Chiefs offensive coordinator would get a head coaching job, but that doesn’t look to be the case anymore, as only one team remains in the “needing a new head coach” journey.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

This week in particular has seen a lot of teams hire their guy for the 2020 season with the Cowboys bringing in Mike McCarthy, the Panthers hiring Matt Rhule of Baylor, and the Giants were impressed by Patriots wide receiver coach Joe Judge. Those three hires happened within a 24-hour span and once it was down to the Panthers, Giants, and Browns, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Bieniemy this year.

Meanwhile, the Browns are now the only team without a head coach, and that means the chances of Bieniemy remaining with Kansas City are pretty large. Bieniemy did meet with Cleveland last week, but the Browns continue to interview other options.

While I’d obviously love for Bieniemy to get the opportunity to become a head coach, I don’t want him to go to Cleveland. The Browns have so many issues everywhere and are so dysfunctional with all of those personalities in the locker room. Bieniemy shouldn’t be thrown into that. My hope for him is that he returns to Kansas City next year, continues to improve his resumé, and gets an opportunity to coach somewhere in the 2021 season.

Kansas City Chiefs fans are used to seeing their offensive coordinators find head coaching jobs and it’ll be the same situation for Eric Bieniemy. It might not be this year, like most of us thought it’d be, but more than likely, he’ll get that coveted head coaching job a year from now and the Chiefs will once again be looking to promote someone to offensive coordinator.
