ALL-DECADE TEAM FOR 2010S

MVP OF THE DECADE – ROYALS FANS OF THE 2014 SEASON

The MVP really started with the last home game of the 2013 season. For those who may have forgotten, it was the game that ended with a walk-off grand slam by Royals outfielder Justin Maxwell. It was more than just a win that Sunday afternoon on September 21st.

The Royals fans refused to leave the K that day because there was a still a hunger from a sold out crowd to win. The crowd chanted “Let’s go Royals” during and after Maxwell’s interview all the way to the parking lot.

The Royals were still in the hunt for the AL Wild Card going on the road for the last seven games of the year. Unfortunately they came up short, but the momentum and desire to win rolled into the 2014 season.

In 2014, Royals fans came alive after receiving some mild criticism for a lackadaisical showing on a Tuesday night home game in August. Ned Yost expressed his disappointment when only 13,847 fans witnessed an Alex Gordon walk-off homerun that gave the team a 1 1/2 game lead in the AL Central.

The fans responded with a display that even captured the attention of the national media to include a nomination of sportsman of the year by Sports Illustrated’s Steve Rushin.

From the magical Wild Card game until Game 7 of the World Series, Royals fans showed just how much Kansas City really loves baseball. It’s still amazing how loud the “Let’s go Royals” chant was even after falling just short of winning it in all in 2014.

It still gives chills to those of us who were at the K that night. The best part was there was a sense that a celebration might place a year later.
