THE MIND GAME

Perhaps the factor that KC Chiefs fans are most nervous about is the Super Bowl drought their team holds. Maybe it’s just the team and their history and a Super Bowl isn’t in the cards.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Several are probably guessing Kansas City will go into New England in round two this year and Tom Brady will have a couple big throws, Mahomes will have a good game, and the Patriots run game combined with a couple 50/50 calls that went the Patriots way will ensure another New England AFC Championship appearance.

While this could be true, and maybe the Chiefs just aren’t built to climb Bill Belichick mountain, there’s a more optimistic approach that all fans must consider. Brady is not who he used to be, their offense is incredibly weak with no Gronkowski. Their defense showed no signs of being able to slow down Mahomes in week 14, and maybe, just maybe, this is the passing of the torch for a Mahomes 15-year run that parallels with Brady’s.

Though it’s wishful thinking and goes against all of Chiefs history, there’s a certain feeling about Mahomes that has already transcended that history. His electric arm captivated us last year, and his mentality to go toe-to-toe with the greatest we’ve seen could start his legacy this year as more than just a highlight reel player.

LAMAR JACKSON

Taking it a step further, Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes may be joined together in NFL history for a long time. Jackson is the surefire bet for MVP this year and it would be story-book if the two met in the AFC Championship.

The future MVP got some playoff chops last year in the postseason, but at some point he may need to prove his arm in the cold weather. It just seems like fate that the two should meet this year and start a rivalry that is similar to Brady and Manning.

Mahomes should certainly have a chip on his shoulder considering Jackson’s hype this year and with many claiming he’s the face of the NFL.  But both would crave this matchup and so would NFL fans all over the country, whether from Baltimore or Kansas City or not.
