Kansas Football fails to address hole at quarterback on Early Signing Day

Kansas football finally saw positive production from quarterback Carter Stanley in 2019, but they don’t have a true successor to Stanley for 2020 and failed to find a true replacement on Early Signing Day.

When looking at Kansas football‘s Early Signing Day, they did pretty well considering how bad their program has been and that it’s only Les Miles’ second year at the helm. The Jayhawks finished in the top 50 of recruiting classes, per 247Sports and found some good talent.

The glaring issue, however, is that they failed to bring in a viable option at quarterback for 2020. Not having a stable quarterback has played a large role in KU being so bad on the gridiron over the last decade and even though Stanley was good last year, he’s graduated and off to bigger and brighter things now.

Last year, the Jayhawks brought in Thomas MacVittie, who wound up backing up Stanley though all of 2019. MacVittie probably has the best shot at starting in 2020, though Benton Smith of KU Sports wrote that offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon listed Miles Kendrick as another potential option.

More from Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas added just one quarterback in this year’s Early Signing Day class and that player is Jalon Daniels out of Lawndale, California. Daniels is a dual-threat quarterback and three-star recruit who will need time to learn before being thrown to the wolves. That paves the way for MacVittie or Kendrick to take the snaps in 2020.

The Jayhawks have quarterbacks on their roster, which could be why they weren’t able to sign more than one this signing period, but it’s disappointing nonetheless. KU only won three games this year, but the improvements were there and a lot of that was because of the play of Carter Stanley.

Kansas has to build on that momentum by continuing to add quarterbacks who can help get this program back to relevancy. Miles did a nice job at doing so in year one, but we all know too well how if a team or program doesn’t get the quarterback position right, it’ll screw them up for years to come.

Hopefully Daniels is able to take the snaps in a few years and lead the Jayhawks to great things, but for now, it’s not crazy for Kansas fans to be a little disappointed at the lack of quarterback depth added through this signing class.

There’s still time to add some talent, but it looks like Kansas football fans will be seeing a heavy dose of Thomas MacVittie and Miles Kendrick in 2020.
