The Kansas City Chiefs are on a two game win streak. Has it helped them out in the AFC playoff seeding or will they remain in the same spot?

After decimating the Raiders this past weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs put themselves in very good position to win their fourth straight AFC West title, giving them an automatic spot in the postseason. The question now is what seed will the Chiefs be when the regular season concludes and playoff football begins?

Without further ado, here are the AFC playoff standings after week 13.

  1. Baltimore Ravens (10-2) – BYE
  2. New England Patriots (10-2) – BYE
  3. Houston Texans (8-4)
  4. Kansas City Chiefs (8-4)
  5. Buffalo Bills (9-3)
  6. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-5)

IN THE HUNT: TITANS (7-5)

There was big movement this week, as the Ravens overtook the Patriots for home field advantage! The Ravens obviously beat New England a few weeks ago and that proved vital here, as now they sit as the number one overall seed.

The Chiefs still sit in that four spot and that loss to Houston will cost them the three seed if the two finish the season with the same record. If the season ended today, Kansas City would play host to the Bills in the Wild Card round while the Texans would welcome in the Steelers, who have continued to keep themselves in the playoffs despite all of the injuries they’ve sustained.

I only included the Titans in the IN THE HUNT section because they’re the only other AFC team with a winning record. Oakland and Indianapolis are both 6-6, but they have a lot of work to do if they want to make the postseason.

As for week 14, there are a lot of current playoff teams squaring off against each other. The Ravens travel to Buffalo and the Patriots host the Chiefs in arguably the biggest game of the week. The Texans host the Broncos while the Steelers travel to Arizona. Those two games aren’t quite as enticing as the other two are.

Now, let’s take a look at the NFC playoff picture, which had some big time movement as well.

  1. New Orleans Saints (10-2) – BYE (Clinched NFC South)
  2. Seattle Seahawks (10-2) – BYE
  3. Green Bay Packers (9-3)
  4. Dallas Cowboys (6-6)
  5. San Francisco 49ers (10-2)
  6. Minnesota Vikings (8-4)

IN THE HUNT: RAMS (7-5)

Any time the number one seed changes, it’s big news and we saw it happen in both conferences this week! The 49ers losing to Baltimore and the Seahawks winning on Monday night over Minnesota proved vital, as it forced San Francisco into the five spot and propelled the Saints into the number one overall seed.

New Orleans is the only team to have clinched a spot in the playoffs so far, as their win over Atlanta on Thanksgiving was enough to crown them as NFC South champions.

It’d be unfair for the Niners to finish the year with double digit wins and have to be a Wild Card team, but that’s the way the league is set up unfortunately. The Chiefs had to do this in 2013 and again in 2015, so it happens more often than you think.

The top two seeds have some big match-ups this weekend, as New Orleans hosts the 49ers and the Seahawks travel to LA for a date with the Rams. The other games are Green Bay vs Washington, Dallas vs Chicago on Thursday night, and Minnesota vs Detroit.

Going back to the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs have a really difficult game ahead of them this weekend, but if they can win that one and stay on pace with the Texans, the three seed is absolutely in play. Plus, they’d then have defeated both of the top seeds and that would be critical if the Ravens and Patriots trip up along the way.
