The KC Chiefs are winners of two straight games and they’ve done so despite their MVP quarterback not playing like his usual self.

Even with two straight wins, not everything has been sunshine and sprinkles for the Kansas City Chiefs. We’ve seen back-to-back questionable performances by Patrick Mahomes, but at the end of the day, all that matters is leaving the game with a W. That’s what the Chiefs have done despite not MVP-like performances by their reigning MVP.

We’ll start with the most recent game against the Raiders in which Mahomes went 15 of 29 for 175 yards and a touchdown while getting sacked once. He also rushed for 25 yards and a touchdown.

The weather might have played a factor, as it was very windy in Kansas City on Sunday afternoon/evening, but Mahomes looked off throughout this game. That being said, he still totaled two touchdowns (one through the air and one on the ground) and didn’t throw an interception (thank you, referees!).

Prior to the bye week, the Chiefs played the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football and Mahomes wasn’t his usual self in that game either, going 19 of 32 for 182 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while getting sacked once. He rushed for 59 yards in that game.

More from Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes might not have played well in either of those games, but the most important thing is that the Kansas City Chiefs went 2-0 in both match-ups. Their defense has been playing much better recently, especially when it comes to forcing turnovers and putting their offense in better position to score.

If this was last year’s defense and Mahomes had two consecutive bad games, the Chiefs more than likely don’t win either of those battles. That just shows how far the defense has come this year and how even when the Chiefs’ MVP quarterback isn’t having his best day, the team can stay in the game and keep the team afloat. We also saw that when Mahomes was injured and out for a few weeks.

This is important moving forward because the Kansas City Chiefs can’t win if Mahomes does all of the work. Football is a team sport and if the defense can play as well as they have been lately, this team should be able to make a run come playoff season.

Hopefully Patrick Mahomes rebounds and plays out of his mind next week in Foxborough because while the KC Chiefs have shown they can win without him, having elite/MVP Mahomes against that Patriots defense would be preferred.
