KC Chiefs: Time for Darrel Williams to step up against Raiders
The KC Chiefs will be without Damien Williams this Sunday against the Raiders, paving the way for Darrel Williams to step up in the back field.
Well, so much for having a fully healthy offense. Damien Williams has been listed as OUT for Sunday’s game against the Raiders, meaning the Kansas City Chiefs will turn to the rest of their back field to make a splash in the run game.
We all know that LeSean McCoy will get a decent amount of carries, but his fumbling issues might cause Andy Reid to go away from him a little bit. That paves the way for second year running back Darrel Williams to make some noise and the Chiefs desperately need their run game to step it up in week 13.
Williams has yet to start a game this season, but has appeared in all 11 games during his sophomore season as a pro. To this point, he has 35 carries for 128 yards and three touchdowns while also hauling in 14 receptions for 164 yards.
The Chiefs rushing attack hasn’t done much this year and it’s put added pressure on Patrick Mahomes and the aerial attack. Teams know the Chiefs struggle with running the ball and have been able to fixate more on stopping the passing game.

While Damien Williams was good for the Chiefs last year, he hasn’t been effective this year, and it’ll be nice to see what Darrel Williams can do in a bigger role. He had to step up in the later minutes of the Chargers game due to both Damien and McCoy going down, carrying the ball 11 times for 35 yards and a touchdown.
As Adam Teicher noted in the tweet above, the Chiefs will roll with Darrel, McCoy, and rookie Darwin Thompson, who has been invisible in his first year in the NFL.
This will be a huge game for Darrel Williams. If he can burst through the Raiders defensive line and make some plays, perhaps the Chiefs will lean on him a little more moving forward. If, however, he plays as poorly as the running backs have in general this season, that’ll be a clear sign that the team needs to draft a running back early on in the draft next year.
Do you think Darrel Williams will make a big impact on the game this Sunday? Or will the rushing attack continue to be an anomaly for the KC Chiefs offense?
