Nebraska football has one more game remaining in the 2019 regular season and they have a chance to make this season a lot less disappointing. They can do that by knocking off the Hawkeyes on Friday.

It’s been a season full of frustrations for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2019, as head coach Scott Frost hasn’t had the kind of sophomore season that a lot of fans were expecting. Even with the mostly downs that the team has experienced this year, the Huskers are still one win away from making a bowl game in 2019.

It won’t come easy, as Nebraska will welcome in the 17th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, who have had the Huskers’ number over the last half decade. The game is in Lincoln and that probably helped sway the odds in Nebraska’s favor a bit; They’re only four and a half point dogs to a ranked Iowa team. A few weeks ago, that number probably would have been higher.

Beating Iowa would turn what’s mostly been a bad season into an improved season. This team has had some tough losses this year, but their blowout (and nearly shutout) win over the Maryland Terrapins might have been enough to motivate this team in their final game of the season.

More from Nebraska Cornhuskers

It didn’t seem like this team had much more fight left in them, but they took it to the Terrapins and proved they could still be a good team in all facets of the game (yes, even on special teams). Maryland isn’t a good team and not anywhere near the opponent that Iowa is, but Nebraska burying them early on showed they haven’t given up on the season.

Going 6-6 might not seem like a big accomplishment, but it would be a huge improvement for this team from where they were a year ago.

For one, they’d make a bowl game for the first time since the 2016 season and would have won an extra two games in total. While 5-7 is technically an improvement from a season ago, fans expected a whole lot more in the second year of Frost’s tenure, so winning just one more game from his first season wouldn’t really make fans jump for joy.

Taking down the Hawkeyes is no small task, but Nebraska took them down to the wire in Iowa City last year. The teams might be a bit different, but with bowl eligibility on the line, could we see one final push from Nebraska football in 2019? Let’s hope so.

Go Big Red!
