The Kansas City Chiefs temporarily sat in the third spot of the AFC playoffs, but they’re back to the four seed after their bye week.

We all knew the third seed was temporary for the Kansas City Chiefs, but now that every team has had a bye week, the records won’t be uneven and it’ll be easier to figure out the seedings. Let’s take a look at the playoff picture in the AFC.

  1. New England Patriots (10-1) – BYE
  2. Baltimore Ravens (9-2) – BYE
  3. Houston Texans (7-4)
  4. Kansas City Chiefs (7-4)
  5. Buffalo Bills (8-3)
  6. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-5)

IN THE HUNT: RAIDERS (6-5), COLTS (6-5), TITANS (6-5)

The Patriots and Ravens have a pretty good hold at the two bye weeks and after seeing the Ravens dismantle the Los Angeles Rams, they’re flying high right now. The Chiefs do have the tiebreaker against the Ravens so if they’re able to win out and Baltimore slips a bit, KC still has a chance to grab one of those top two spots.

Because the Texans beat the Chiefs, Houston rightfully won the tiebreaker over Kansas City and therefore gets the three spot. If the season ended today, the Chiefs would host the Bills and the Texans would get the Steelers in Houston.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

There’s a lot of teams technically in the hunt, but I only included those with winning records. The Raiders would have been in the sixth spot had they not lost to the Jets (LOL). That sixth spot is very much up for grabs, but Pittsburgh has it as of now.

For week 13, the Patriots travel to Houston, Baltimore hosts the 49ers in what should be an awesome game, the Chiefs host the Raiders, the Bills play the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, and the Steelers host the Browns. That Steelers/Browns game should be interesting following the drama at the end of their last game.

Now, let’s take at the NFC playoff picture.

  1. San Francisco 49ers (10-1) – BYE
  2. New Orleans Saints (9-2) – BYE
  3. Green Bay Packers (8-3)
  4. Dallas Cowboys (6-5)
  5. Seattle Seahawks (9-2)
  6. Minnesota Vikings (8-3)

IN THE HUNT: RAMS (6-5)

The NFC seems to be pretty cut and dry now as far as the teams who will be in the postseason. The seeding is obviously still up in the air, but the six teams listed above will more than likely be the ones in the playoffs. The only exception is the Cowboys and Eagles are still battling it out for the NFC East, so Dallas making it isn’t a given.

The Saints jumped back up to the second spot after the Packers fell to the Niners last week. If the season ended today, Green Bay would host the Vikings in an NFC North match-up and the Cowboys would welcome in the Seahawks.

The Kansas City Chiefs can still get the two seed, but they have to win out the rest of the way and that’s not a picnic. They have a game at Foxborough in two weeks, which is by far their toughest game left on the schedule.

If the Chiefs win out and the Ravens lost at least two games, KC could grab the two seed. It’s not impossible by any means.

How much will the playoff standings change next week?
