Kansas City Chiefs: Sammy Watkins not living up to hype

A lot of Kansas City Chiefs fans were excited when it was announced that the team would be signing Sammy Watkins to a three-year deal prior to the 2018 season. Watkins has not been what fans were expecting to say the least.

The Kansas City Chiefs figured they’d be an explosive offense once Patrick Mahomes took over and that was likely why Sammy Watkins wanted to come play for the Chiefs. The amount of money the Chiefs dished out to Watkins seemed absurd for an injury prone guy, but fans were willing to take the risk.

Well – let’s just say it Chiefs Kingdom – Sammy Watkins has been a disappointment during his tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In 2018 – his first year with the organization – Watkins played in ten games (starting nine) grabbing 40 receptions for 519 yards and three touchdowns. It appeared that he’d be blowing those numbers out of the water in year two, especially after game number one where he had nine catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns. He matched his entire 2018 season touchdown total in just one game.

We all probably should have pumped the brakes after that performance, but we didn’t because no football fan does that. Watkins has 42 catches for 538 yards and three touchdowns on the season and since that week one game, he has 33 receptions for 340 yards with zero touchdowns.

This just goes to show that Sammy Watkins hasn’t been the guy fans were expecting to get. When healthy, he’s lethal, as we saw in week one, but since then, he’s failed to make much of an impact at all. His next best game came a few weeks ago against Minnesota when he had seven grabs for 63 yards. That’s a big drop off from 198 yards and three scores.

Watkins has missed two games this year as well, which goes along with the whole injury prone thing. With just one year remaining on his contract, it won’t be shocking if the Kansas City Chiefs opt to part ways with the former Clemson star. He was supposed to be the unquestioned WR2 this year, but even with Tyreek Hill out for an extended period of time, Watkins couldn’t make his presence known.

It was a good signing by Brett Veach on paper, but there was definitely a gut feeling by most fans that this would be how things would go for Sammy Watkins as a Chief. You win some, you lose some and in this case, the KC Chiefs lost the deal.
