Nebraska football is coming off four straight losses and are running out of games to win this season. Would beating the 3-7 Maryland Terrapins salvage what’s been a disappointing season?

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have just two more games remaining this year and this weekend’s match-up against the Maryland Terrapins is probably the last one they have a realistic shot at winning.

These two programs had the same hype at the beginning of the year, as Nebraska was ranked heading into the 2019 campaign while the Terrapins were ranked after three weeks of the season due to going undefeated. Well, since then Maryland has lost every single game and looked pretty lousy in the process.

Nebraska, despite heading to Maryland for this one, is a six point favorite, which is crazy considering how poorly this team has played in 2019. They haven’t been good on the road and the defense can barely stop anyone.

More from Nebraska Cornhuskers

That being said, for as bad as Nebraska has played, the Terrapins have been even worse. They have one less win than the Huskers do and have no shot at playing in a bowl game this year. Nebraska can still go bowling this year, but they have to go undefeated for the rest of the season and it starts with this game against Maryland.

The Terrapins allow more points per game than Nebraska does, but they do average more points scored per game. This should be a high-scoring affair between two teams in desperation mode.

Should the Cornhuskers win this game, obviously that’s good because losing stinks, but is it really something to celebrate? This was supposed to be a special season for Nebraska and it went south really fast. Nebraska squandered opportunities to go bowling this year and now it comes down to having to beat Maryland and a good Iowa team in order to accomplish that feat.

Say Nebraska wins this game and then loses to Iowa next Friday afternoon. Is 5-7 considered a good season for a team that was grouped in as a Big Ten West contender?

Scott Frost is only in his second year at the helm in Lincoln, but fans expected more than this. Maybe a win over Maryland won’t be worth celebrating, but maybe – just maybe – it will jumpstart this group and get them motivated for 2020 and beyond.

If not, then when will the turnaround begin? Fans have been patient enough over the years. Time for us to start seeing results!
