Mizzou football has been on a downward spiral over the last month, but even with all of their shortcomings, the Tigers are in good shape to make a bowl game this season.

Things were looking good for the Missouri Tigers after the first month and a half of the season, but the black and gold crashed back down to Earth and are now 5-5 on the year with just two games remaining.

The bad news is that Mizzou won’t be partaking in a New Year’s Six bowl game this year due to their recent skid. The good news, however, is that they have a very good chance at becoming bowl eligible by the end of the season.

Missouri’s final two games are against Tennessee (5-5 overall, 3-3 in conference play) and Arkansas (2-8 overall, 0-6 in conference play) and if they can’t squeak out a win against one of those teams, then they don’t deserve to go to a bowl game in the first place.

More from Missouri Tigers

Missouri hosts Tennessee on Saturday evening and are field goal favorites against the Volunteers. These two programs have had very different seasons yet sit here with the same record, just one win shy of becoming bowl eligible. Whoever wins this game will for sure be playing an extra game this season.

Tennessee has come a long way since losing to Georgia State, a team they paid to play them, in their season opener. They’re still not a great team, but neither is Missouri if we’re being entirely honest.

If Mizzou beats the Vols, then great! They’re bowl eligible and their final game against Arkansas doesn’t mean as much. That being said, I sincerely hope the Tigers can beat the two-win Razorbacks, who have yet to win a conference game this year and look like a total joke each week.

The reason why it’s SO important for MU to knock off Tennessee is because they get the Vols at home. Mizzou has to travel to Fayetteville to play the Razorbacks the day after Thanksgiving and the Tigers are winless away from Columbia this year.

Yes, Arkansas is atrocious this season, but so is Vanderbilt and they handled MU when they made the trip to Nashville. Missouri also got whooped up by a bad Kentucky team in Lexington. So a win in Fayetteville isn’t a given, no matter how bad the Hogs are this year.

All Mizzou football has to do is win one more game and they’ll go bowling for the third straight year. If they fail to capture another win, perhaps it will be time to move on from Barry Odom.
