Dark Horse Candidates

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs

The reigning MVP came back from a dislocated kneecap in style on Sunday. He threw for over 400 yards and did his part, per usual. As is typically the case, the defense let him down again resulting in a Tennessee win.

This is good news for his MVP outlook for the rest of the season though. The Chiefs are going to be in shootouts and there’s no one with a better quarterback to potentially win those. That being said, he’s on the outside looking in due to his injury that resulted in him missing two and a half games and the Chiefs 6-4 record.

A win in Foxborough in a couple weeks could certainly change that. He made need to win out the rest of the way to be seriously considered, though.

Deshaun Watson, QB, Houston Texans

Deshaun Watson has been his usual steady self. He has the fifth best quarterback rating in the NFL this year and most importantly, that has led to wins. The Texans are 6-3 and haven’t lost a game by more than a touchdown all season. He went into Arrowhead and topped Mahomes, which gives him the edge between those two.

Coming out of their bye, Houston has a showdown in Baltimore. A win over Lamar Jackson, who we may see later on this list, would go a long way for his MVP case. Just like Mahomes, to make a leap in this list, he needs a lot of wins in the next seven weeks and a top-two seed in the AFC wouldn’t hurt.
