Kansas City Chiefs: NFL playoff picture after week nine of 2019
Now that we’re into the month of November and officially halfway through the NFL regular season, it’s time to do weekly playoff picture posts! Where would the Kansas City Chiefs be seeded if the season were to end today?
Somehow we’re already halfway into the 2019 NFL season and the Kansas City Chiefs are in great position to make it to the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. Let’s take a look at how the playoff standings would look if the season concluded after week nine, starting, of course, with the AFC.
- New England Patriots (8-1) – BYE
- Baltimore Ravens (6-2) – BYE
- Houston Texans (6-3)
- Kansas City Chiefs (6-3)
- Buffalo Bills (6-2)
- Indianapolis Colts (5-3)
IN THE HUNT: STEELERS (4-4), RAIDERS (4-4), JAGUARS (4-5), TITANS (4-5), CHARGERS (4-5)
If the season concluded now, the Chiefs would host the Bills in the Wild Card round while the Colts would travel to Houston for an AFC South battle in the other Wild Card game. Assuming everyone played to their seedings, the Chiefs would likely be in Foxborough for the divisional round while the Texans would play in Baltimore.
The fourth seed isn’t what Chiefs Kingdom was expecting coming into the year, but there’s still plenty of time to climb in the standings. Kansas City has been without Patrick Mahomes for two weeks now and he should be getting close to returning to action. Their schedule also eases up a bit while the Ravens gets much tougher.

Also, the Chiefs do hold the tiebreaker over Baltimore for beating them in week three, so if the two were to finish the season with the same record, KC would hold the advantage. A two-seed is most definitely still in play here for the Chiefs.
No team has mathematically been eliminated from the postseason yet, but I opted to only include the four-win teams in the “IN THE HUNT” section. Those teams have a legitimate chance to make it, while the 1-7 Jets do not.
In week ten, the Ravens travel to winless Cincinnati, the Chiefs head to Nashville to play the Titans, the Bills travel to Cleveland, and the Colts host the hapless Dolphins. New England and Houston are on their bye weeks.
Here are the NFC seedings:
- San Francisco 49ers (8-0) – BYE
- New Orleans Saints (7-1) – BYE
- Green Bay Packers (7-2)
- Dallas Cowboys (5-3)
- Seattle Seahawks (7-2)
- Minnesota Vikings (6-3)
The NFC is a lot more cutthroat than the AFC is, that’s for sure. There are a lot more good teams on that side of the league and their playoff picture is a lot more intense to follow.
Right now, the Vikings would play in Green Bay while the Cowboys would host the Seahawks in the Wild Card round. Assuming the teams played to their seeds, it’d be 49ers vs Cowboys and Saints vs Packers in the divisional rounds. Those would be great games!
How do you see the playoff picture looking after this week?
