KC Chiefs: Standing pat at 2019 trade deadline might not be a bad thing

A lot of KC Chiefs fans are probably angry about the team not making a move at the trade deadline. While I get the frustrations, maybe this wasn’t the worst decision.

Well, the trade deadline came and went, and the Kansas City Chiefs decided not to make a move. Brett Veach looked at the current team that was taking the field for the Chiefs and thought, “We’re good enough to make a Super Bowl”.

While it’s disappointing this team didn’t go out there and trade for a superstar or even just a good player, this isn’t the worst thing that could happen. I’ll tell you why.

For one, the Chiefs have been decimated with injuries this year, which has resulted in their recent skid that has seen them lose three of their last four games. In their most recent game agains the Packers, the Chiefs were without six of their starters, and still nearly won the game.

When those guys return to action, the Chiefs will be back to the team they looked like in the first month of the season. It’s hard to be a dominant team when you’re missing your starting quarterback, left tackle, offensive guard, cornerback, defensive tackle, and linebacker. That’s what the Chiefs were without on Sunday when they still nearly knocked off the Packers on Sunday Night Football.

Another reason not bringing someone else in might have been wise is because the Chiefs need to pay Patrick Mahomes this offseason and they might decide to pay Chris Jones as well. With all of the cap space the Chiefs currently have, one has to think that not making a move might have been because the team is planning to sign both of those guys to long-term deals next spring.

And last, but most certainly not least, the Chiefs can’t keep giving up their first round picks. They haven’t gotten to select a player in the first round of a draft since they traded up to get Mahomes in 2017. Since then, they’ve had to wait until round two to make their pick.

Some of the guys the Chiefs had been linked to (mainly Jalen Ramsey) would have cost the franchise yet another first rounder and that’s just not something this team can afford to part with, especially not when they’re about to shell out a large chunk of change to their franchise quarterback. They’re going to need those picks to build around the reigning MVP.

Look, I get it, Chiefs fans. It would have made all of us feel better about the defense had Brett Veach gone out there and done something. The defense has shown they’re slowly improving though and once the injured starters return, maybe this unit could become an average defense at best.

At the end of the day, however, Veach opted to stay put and not trade for anyone. We won’t know if this was the right decision or not until early 2020, but for now, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Perhaps it was the best decision for where this team is at right now.
