When the KC Chiefs’ 2019 schedule was revealed last April, a lot of football fans circled the week eight game.

That week eight game, which was the Kansas City Chiefs vs the Green Bay Packers at Arrowhead Stadium for a Sunday night rendezvous, was pitting reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes against one of the all-time greats in Aaron Rodgers.

After a few days of speculation as to whether Mahomes would play or not, it was made official that we’ll be getting Rodgers against Chiefs backup quarterback Matt Moore, who came in for relief of Mahomes last week after the initial injury.

Moore is a good backup option, but “Matt Moore vs Aaron Rodgers” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it that “Patrick Mahomes vs Aaron Rodgers” had. It’s a bummer that football fans everywhere will be missing out on a current MVP versus a former two time MVP winner battle, but we see injuries occur in the sport all the time.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

When looking at these two quarterbacks, a lot of people compared Mahomes to Rodgers, especially last year. They both can sling the football from just about anywhere on the field and are the guy their team leans on to lead them to victory, especially when everything else isn’t clicking.

Had this game pitted two of the sport’s greats against each other, we’d more than likely have been looking at a shootout in Kansas City. The Chiefs defense is less than stellar (yes, they were good against the Broncos, but that was the Broncos) and the Packers defense is good, but can be scored on (see the Eagles game last month).

With Mahomes not out there, this game could be a lot more lopsided. Andy Reid will dial things up from the days of having Alex Smith under center to make things easier for Moore in the offensive scheme, but that’ll result in more runs and short passes. We won’t be seeing the big time bombs from both quarterbacks in this game and that’s disappointing. We want long touchdown passes!

Football is a violent sport and injuries occur way more often than fans would like. When an injury occurs to a quarterback, that can change things drastically for a team and no organization knows this better than the Packers, who have been without Rodgers due to injury quite a bit throughout his career. When he misses time, Green Bay has struggled to do much of anything.

Fortunately, this game doesn’t have much bearing on the KC Chiefs moving forward. Yes, it’d have been fun to see two of the league’s quarterback greats go toe-to-toe, but at the end of the day, the Chiefs can afford to lose this one.

I guess we’ll just have to wait for the Kansas City Chiefs to face the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl in the near future, huh?
