Weak AFC West should help keep KC Chiefs afloat while Mahomes is out

The KC Chiefs have a big game this Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers and they’ll have to try and win it without their MVP quarterback. Fortunately, the Chiefs should still be in a decent position due to how bad the AFC West is.

After seven weeks of action in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs are the only team in the AFC West with a record above .500. The Raiders sit right at .500 while the Broncos and Chargers are both three games under the mark.

The AFC West not being what it once was (a tough division) could result in the Chiefs not having to sweat it out much when it comes to winning the division and making the playoffs. This could also mean no rushing Patrick Mahomes out there before he’s truly ready to return to action.

Let’s look at the other three teams in the division right now.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The Raiders, who are 3-3 at the moment, are a tough team to peg. They beat the Colts (who took down the Chiefs) and played the Packers tough until they made too many mistakes and Green Bay got too far ahead. They’ve been better than most of us expected, but with some tough games still to come, Oakland might not be hanging around all that long.

The Broncos started off 0-4 and slowly started to rebound, but then Kansas City exposed them for who they really are and that’s a garbage team. Considering they have one of the worst quarterbacks in the leagues and even when he’s able to make a decent throw, he gets pummeled due to a pitiful offensive line, it’s safe to say the Broncos won’t threaten KC for the division crown.

Lastly, and the most surprising AFC West team this year, is the Chargers, who are constantly finding new ways to lose. Had it not been for the Colts missing three field goals in week one, Los Angeles would be 1-6 right now with their only victory having come against the Dolphins. That’s the only surefire win the Chargers had from the get go and it was against  team who is obviously tanking.

Yes, it’s unfortunate that the Kansas City Chiefs lost Patrick Mahomes for a few weeks, but if it’s going to happen, this was the best year for it to occur due to the weak division. Last year, LA finished with the same record as KC (12-4) and every game mattered.

With the Chiefs more than likely not winning home field advantage this year, winning every single game isn’t as critical now. They should be able to remain at the top of the AFC West, win their fourth straight division title, and hopefully Matt Moore did a decent enough job and the Chiefs can finish the year as the two-seed in the playoffs.

That’s the goal anyway.
