KC Chiefs: Looking ahead to backup quarterback options for 2020
IN HOUSE (OR FORMER IN HOUSE) OPTIONS
CHAD HENNE
Chad Henne is a very similar player to Matt Moore, but we didn’t get to see much out of him last year when he backed up Mahomes. Henne turns 35 next summer, so he’s only a year younger than Moore, but unless we see him in action when he returns from the injured reserve, it’s doubtful the Chiefs bring him back after this year.
KYLE SHURMUR
Undrafted rookie Kyle Shurmur will finally get a chance to be on the active roster this weekend, sitting as the backup quarterback to Matt Moore against the Packers. If Moore struggles and Henne isn’t back by that point to takeover, perhaps Shurmur will get some playing time and impress enough to be the backup moving forward.
CHASE LITTON
Not sure if this is a legitimate option here, but Chase Litton did spend all of 2018 with the Chiefs and was on their preseason roster this year. He was cut in favor of Kyle Shurmur and wound up signing with the Jaguars, where he still sits on their practice squad. If the Chiefs felt like Litton was the answer as the backup, they wouldn’t have cut him, so throw this in the doubtful category.
