You win some and you lose some. In this case, the KC Chiefs win the game and they potentially lose Patrick Mahomes for an extended period of time.

The only saving grace for this game is the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs defense played lights out. This makes it eight straight against the Denver Broncos and a big pick me up after the last two weeks.

Without further ado, here is what we learned.

Patrick Mahomes is Injured

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Let’s go ahead and get the giant elephant dealt with, shall we? With about ten minutes left in the first half, the Chiefs called for a quarterback sneak on fourth and inches and Patrick Mahomes looked to have dislocated his knee cap.

If he is out for any significant time, this is going to suck on so many levels. Not only are the Chiefs losing the best young quarterback in the league, but the NFL loses one of its next big stars. The play call was the right one and the injury is unfortunate, but if anyone can make Matt Moore look decent, it is Andy Reid.

Obviously, all thoughts and prayers towards Mahomes and a quick recovery.

Defense Played Lights Out

Where has this defense been? The Chiefs defense played on an elite level. This was a big statement made by the much-maligned unit after the first six weeks. The defense only allowed six points, had nine sacks (eight on Flacco), 205 yards allowed and they even scored a touchdown.  Frank Clark played like the player he was in Seattle racking up two sacks.

The defense tackled well and shut down an extremely potent rushing attack. The only real hiccup was the first drive where two penalties led to the Broncos’ only touchdown of the night. If the defense can continue to play half, as well as they did on Thursday, the Chiefs can win a lot of games.

Next Man Up

With Patrick Mahomes likely to miss time, the Chiefs will turn to Matt Moor, who played okay, I guess. He isn’t Patrick Mahomes, but he has won games in this league and even lit the Chiefs up back in 2011.

The offense is probably going to resemble more of what it did from 2013 to 2017 with Alex Smith than in its current form. Like it or not, Moore is likely the starting quarterback for at least a couple of weeks or more depending on the severity of the injury.

That being said, he did have a beautiful touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill down the sideline and made some key throws to Travis Kelce to keep drives alive. Those are plays Moore is going to have to make down the stretch.

Luckily, the Chiefs have a mini bye week now so that gives them plenty of time to get prepared for the Packers and Vikings. Kyle Shurmur will likely be called up from the Practice Squad to serve as his backup or the Chiefs could look to the streets.

Ugly in Denver

As noted several times in previous articles, I like to talk about the opponent in one of these points. In this case, things are not looking good in Denver. Against a defense that had been carved up like a good brisket, Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco was extremely ineffective.

Outside of a couple of throws to budding wide receiver Courtland Sutton, Flacco really didn’t do much through the air. Phillip Lindsay was almost completely shut down by a defense that had been giving up over 100 yards a game on the ground.

On defense, the Broncos played decently after Mahomes came out, but it could have gotten ugly real quick. Things are going to be really interesting to watch in Denver in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

This was a big win for the KC Chiefs. The defense bucked up and shut people up for at least a week. The team showed a lot of heart and finally dominated a game.

Next. Winners and Losers from Week 7 Victory vs Broncos. dark

Sure, the future ultimately lies on the condition of Patrick Mahomes’ right knee, but this was a win that was needed. Now the Chiefs will need to stay focused because Aaron Rodgers and the Packers of Green Bay are no slouches.
