Kansas City Chiefs fans care a lot when people don’t list Patrick Mahomes as the leading MVP candidate. Shouldn’t the biggest worry right now be how bad the run defense is and the current losing streak?

Patrick Mahomes was the first Kansas City Chiefs player to win the MVP award. He more than deserved it too, throwing for 5,000+ yards and 50 touchdowns in his first full year at the helm.

In his second year after being handed the keys to the car, Mahomes is still having a good year, but there have been players who have performed better than him to this point. For some reason, Chiefs fans are WAY too bothered by this.

If the Chiefs were 6-0 right now and Mahomes was throwing bombs right and left (like he was last year and during the first three weeks this season), then I might be right there with you.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The truth of the matter, however, is that Mahomes shouldn’t be the leading MVP candidate right now. There are players more deserving of the title than him and hey – that’s okay. Want to know why? BECAUSE IT’S ONLY WEEK SIX.

Also, the Chiefs are on a two game skid and the biggest concern should be why the team is struggling. Right now that’s because of the run defense (and defense in general) along with the lack of run game and lack of protection for Mahomes.

The biggest concern shouldn’t be people who think Russell Wilson or Christian McCaffrey are more deserving than Mahomes for the league’s Most Valuable Player award. I’d put those two ahead of Mahomes right now as well, as their teams are actually winning football games.

MVPs win games and right now, the Chiefs aren’t winning games.

Mahomes is still having a brilliant season, for what it’s worth. He’s thrown for 2,104 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just threw his first interception over the weekend. He’s still better than advertised, but Wilson has 1,700+ yards and 17 total touchdowns with no interceptions. Wilson’s team has lost one game through six weeks and that loss came at the hands of the New Orleans Saints.

McCaffrey has rushed for 618 yards, totaled 305 receiving yards, and has nine total touchdowns. He has singlehandedly kept the Panthers afloat over the past month. A running back winning MVP isn’t a likely scenario, but if it were going to happen, McCaffrey could be the guy to buck that trend. He’s having quite the start to the season.

Once the Kansas City Chiefs get off this gross losing streak, the spotlight will be back on Patrick Mahomes again, but while the losses continue to pile up – His name will be further and further away from the league’s Most Valuable Player award and that’s something Chiefs Kingdom will have to come to terms with.

Fans need to start worrying more about the rest of the team and how they’re performing before we can start getting mad about MVP discussions. MVPs win games and right now, the Chiefs aren’t winning games. Focus on that.
