The Kansas City Chiefs lost 19-13 to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football, but most fans are mainly pointing the finger at the defense after the first loss of the season. That’s not okay.

Coming into the 2019 season, Kansas City Chiefs fans figured the offense would be prolific and would be able to put up at least 30 points a game. They also figured the offense would HAVE to put up crazy numbers due to the lack of defensive talent that would be taking the field each and every Sunday.

Well, in week five, the defense didn’t play well, no, but they did enough to keep Kansas City in the game, and when push came to shove, it was the offense who let the team down.

Before we dive into all of that, yes, I’m aware the defense surrendered 180 yards rushing to the Colts and that Bashaud Breeland had four awful penalties and played terribly. I’m also aware that the pass rush was non-existent. I know the defense didn’t play great, but we don’t expect them to play great. That being said, they allowed just 19 points and definitely kept the team in the game.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The reason the Kansas City Chiefs had such high expectations coming into this season was because of the offense and what Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Sammy Watkins were going to be able to do on a week-to-week basis. When you have the reigning MVP on your offense, people expect great things, and the Chiefs didn’t deliver in that department on Sunday night.

On the first two drives of the game, the Chiefs moved down the field with ease and came away with ten total points. We all likely thought “Here we go!” and that the offense would look like the same group we saw in the first three weeks of the season.

Little did we know that’d be it for the Chiefs offense for pretty much the rest of the night. They were able to get down field to knock a meaningless field goal through the uprights in the final minutes of the game, but it meant nothing in the long run. The offense was going up against a lousy Colts defense and they got completely shut down, and they deserve to be held responsible for this loss. It wasn’t all on the defense for once.

For the 2019 Kansas City Chiefs to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender, the offense has to be clicking each and every week. We know the defense has its flaws (as evidenced by the 180 yards rushing they surrendered on Sunday night), but we go into games expecting a not-so-great performance by them. We EXPECT great things from the Chiefs offense and when they don’t come through, that results in losses.

With Mahomes on the offense and a wide array of weapons, there’s no reason why the Chiefs offense should only be scoring 13 points against a bottom ranked Colts defense. This loss isn’t solely on the offense, but let’s stop pretending that it was all the defense’s fault because we all know that wasn’t the case.

Take some responsibility, offense. You got shut down by a bad defense at home and it was embarrassing.
