Nebraska Football: What we learned in week one vs South Alabama
SPECIAL TEAMS WAS A ROLLERCOASTER
One of the most painful areas to watch last year was the special teams unit. They weren’t exactly a blast to watch on Saturday, but they definitely had their moments.

The obvious best moment came in the third quarter when J.D. Spielman took a punt return all the way for a touchdown. That was shortly after Eric Lee had a pick-six, which gave the Huskers back to back touchdowns with neither of them coming on offense.
Outside of that punt return, special teams was shaky, at best. Dylan Jorgensen, who was kicking for an injured Barret Pickering, missed the only field goal he was asked to attempt. He did, however, go five for five on extra points, so that’s something.
CONCLUSION
All in all, the Nebraska Cornhuskers left a lot to be desired in their season opener. Yes, a win is always nice, but fans expected to see a blowout in this game and the fact that the Huskers struggled against a non-Power 5 school that only won three games last year isn’t exactly promising, as Nebraska will prepare to play Colorado in Boulder next weekend.
Hopefully this game was simply a case of getting the kinks out and now the Huskers will be good to go. They’ll need to limit the mistakes (especially the turnovers) against a stingy Colorado team that defeated the Huskers in Lincoln last year.
While it wasn’t all bad in this game, it was mostly a disappointing showing from the 24th ranked Huskers and it’ll be interesting if they’re even still ranked heading into the second week of the season.
What takeaways did you have from this game, Nebraska fans?
