Mizzou Football: Loss to Wyoming doesn’t have to derail season
Mizzou football fell to the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday night and to say it was a disappointing start to the season would be an understatement.
Well, even with a lot of hype surrounding them this offseason, the Missouri Tigers proved they’re still the Missouri Tigers by falling 37-31 to a team with a quarterback who can’t even throw the ball.
Despite the season opening loss, this doesn’t have to be the end of hope for Missouri fans when it comes to a bowl game later in the year. It wasn’t a great final result and MU didn’t play well, but at the end of the day, it’s just one game and there’s still plenty of time for the Tigers to right the ship.
Coming into the season, a big reason why a lot of fans and analysts felt confident in Mizzou making a decent run this year was because their schedule was on the easy side. Outside of an away game at Georgia and a home game versus Florida (who the Tigers have handled with ease over the past few years), Missouri’s schedule wasn’t all that menacing.

Yes, MU is 0 for 1 to this point, but the rest of their schedule is still relatively easy. They have a West Virginia team on the decline next week for their home opener in Columbia, Southeast Missouri in two weeks, and a fairly easy slate of SEC games on the agenda over the next few months.
That means Missouri has time to turn things around.
That being said, this was an ugly loss. Mizzou got beat by a quarterback who can’t pass the ball very well and they made some really bad mistakes that came back and bit them in the butt at the end of the night.
The Tigers had no solution for stopping the Wyoming run game, which is definitely something they’ll need to fixate on if they want to right their wrong. The Cowboys racked up almost 300 yards on the ground and added three rushing touchdowns on the night.
Wyoming’s quarterback – Sean Chambers – rushed for 120 yards on 12 carries while only completing six passes for 92 yards. He destroyed Missouri without being able to pass the football and even though the Tigers knew what was coming, they had no solution for stopping him. That simply won’t do if MU wants to find the win column.
At the same time – Missouri did have their moments. They scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make a game of it and came close to making things interesting near the end of the game before falling short of the comeback. Kelly Bryant threw for 423 yards in his first game with Mizzou, proving he can air it out and carry the offense if need be.
Even with those things in mind, a lot will have to change for Mizzou football for their date with West Virginia next week. They need to emphasize stopping the run and limit their errors. If they lose to the Mountaineers, then the season will definitely be a disappointment even two games into the season.
