DARWIN THOMPSON

Darwin Thompson was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round (214th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. Coming into the new season, Thompson was assumed to be a work in progress with only one year in the FBS (Utah State) and playing JUCO (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College) the years prior.

Since day one of camp, Thompson has done nothing but silence any doubters about playing in the league. He has not only flashed his skills, but has outplayed the rest of the running backs that were ahead of him on the depth chart.

Through two weeks of the preseason, Thompson has carried the ball nine times racking up 52 yards and averaging 5.7 yards per carry. He also has one lone reception for 29 yards, which led to a touchdown. Thompson has also been a contributor on special teams and has already made a couple of tackles to add to his resumé.

What doesn’t show up on paper for Thompson is his ability to block pass rushers. There have been multiple plays where he stays in the backfield to protect the quarterback, which is a huge part of making it in the NFL today. Being a man of his size can be difficult to overcome, but he has managed to learn how to stay low and cut blockers down as they are coming through open gaps.

With the emergence of Darwin Thompson this preseason, he has clearly moved himself up on the touch count list and made his way to more playing time. Showing off his speed, cuts, and blocking has caught the eye of the Chiefs fans and coaches.
