The KC Chiefs scooped up Cody Thompson as an undrafted free agent this year and the Toledo product is making the most of his opportunities this preseason.

Every year, there are a few undrafted free agents that Kansas City Chiefs fans heavily campaign for leading up to the regular season. Cody Thompson out of Toledo was one of those guys from the start and the hype for him hasn’t cooled off whatsoever.

Thompson might not have had a ton of receiving yards during his time with the Toledo Rockets, but he sure was a touchdown machine in college. He had double digit touchdowns in both the 2016 and 2018 seasons and could definitely make an impact in the Chiefs offense, especially in the red zone.

So far, Thompson is making the most of his playing time. He led the Chiefs in receiving yards in the Steelers game, grabbing seven receptions for 69 yards and the week prior caught both passes sent his way for 19 yards.

There are a lot of other talented wide receivers on the roster who are battling for a roster spot, but Thompson is standing out and that’s what matters most this time of year. Preseason games are important for these precise reasons and Thompson is making the most of it.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

We know Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and rookie Mecole Hardman will make the team, but Demarcus Robinson isn’t a sure thing like he might have been a few weeks ago. Gehrig Dieter hasn’t even played this preseason, which isn’t a good sign for his future as a Chief. Marcus Kemp‘s injury has also paved the way for Thompson to be catching passes from Patrick Mahomes come the regular season.

With Dieter and Kemp being on the outs now (which sucks for Kemp because he was having a good summer), Thompson and K-State product Byron Pringle can slide into those two open spots. Hill and Watkins could be the two starters, Hardman would be the WR3, and Thompson and Pringle would round out the receiver depth chart.

While that would give the Chiefs a very young receiver roster, that’s actually a good thing. This team needs to stay young and hungry if they want to be in the top tier of NFL teams each and every year moving forward.

Cody Thompson might not become a household name any time soon, but his chances of making the KC Chiefs’ 53-man roster are increasing with every pass he catches.
