The Kansas City Royals released their schedule for the 2020 season and of course the first thing everyone looks for is when and where Opening Day is. What are some other notable tidbits from the 2020 schedule?

The Kansas City Royals released their 2020 schedule and their true Opening Day is in Chicago on March 26th, but Opening Day at the K will be April 2nd against the Seattle Mariners. The Royals play three games against the White Sox before heading to Detroit and then returning home for their Opening Day.

While the Royals don’t get to have a TRUE Opening Day this year, they’ve had it at their stadium the last two years. It’s also the third straight year they’ll open the season against the White Sox.

Other takeaways from the 2020 schedule is that the San Diego Padres are FINALLY come to Kauffman Stadium, not having played there since 2001. One of my brothers is a Padres fan, so him getting to see his favorite team play at the K for the first time in nearly 20 years should be fun.

Obviously with the Padres coming to town, that means it’ll be the first time Eric Hosmer will return to Kauffman Stadium since leaving the Royals for the Padres in free agency last year. His first year as a Padre didn’t go according to plan, but Hosmer is back on track this year. He signed a seven-year deal with San Diego prior to the 2018 season.

With Hosmer coming back to Kansas City for a series, it’d be hard to imagine the Royals not honoring him in one way or another for his efforts during his time with the organization. Without Eric Hosmer, the Royals don’t win the 2015 World Series. He deserves to be recognized that weekend and Royals fans will likely flock to the stadium to see their former first baseman, even if he’s on the other team now.

So yes, the Royals will face the National League West in 2020 and host the Padres, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers while traveling to Colorado and San Francisco to face the Rockies and Giants respectively. They’ll also play the Diamondbacks in Arizona for a home and away series.

Here are the dates of those teams coming to town

  • Dodgers: April 15th-17th (Weekend Series)
  • Diamondbacks: June 30th and July 1st (Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • Padres: July 24th – 26th (Weekend Series)

The Royals travel to Colorado June 22nd-24th, Arizona August 17th and 18th, and San Francisco from August 28th-30th.

The Kansas City Royals will of course face every team in the American League twice while also playing the St. Louis Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium and in St. Louis.
