The Kansas City Chiefs could find additional depth at cornerback using existing depth strength at other positions, specifically trading Demarcus Robinson is an idea that could be logical.

Last year during training camp, the Kansas City Chiefs traded backup offensive lineman Parker Ehinger to the Dallas Cowboys for unknown undrafted cornerback Charvarius Ward.

Needing depth, Ward helped on special teams before jumping into a more prominent role late in the season and now enters the 2019 campaign expected to be a major contributor. For a Chiefs organization still needing more depth and competition at corner, could another trade be worth exploring?

My proposed trade simply looks like this; The Chiefs send the Cincinnati Bengals Demarcus Robinson in exchange for 2018 seventh round selection Jordan Brown, a cornerback from South Dakota State. Maybe if the Bengals are feeling generous, they throw in a late round selection as well.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Robinson is entering his fourth season with the Chiefs and is a free agent after the season. At best, the Florida Gators product is the fourth option in pass routes behind, in some order, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. The production the Chiefs would lose could likely be replaced with a player such as Gehrig Dieter, Byron Pringle, or perhaps even Markus Kemp.

Cincinnati, after losing A.J. Green to a foot injury to start camp, could be looking for a veteran capable of stepping up their game with more playing time. Robinson doesn’t cost much against the salary cap, as Spotrac.com indicates he carries a $2.154 million cap hit.

The KC Chiefs, on the other hand, are in need of depth at cornerback after basically ignoring the position the past couple of offseasons.

Both Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland are free agents after this season and there is little past Ward behind the trio, either for this season or beyond. Jordan Brown from South Dakota State was a prospect I anticipated going earlier in the draft then the seventh round, and is entered the NFL on a standard four-year rookie contract.

Brown would, at a minimum, provide the organization with potential long-term depth at a position they need and, with so many starters looking at big contracts for future seasons (hello Patrick Mahomes), he would provide really low cost depth for an organization that could use it.

For those wondering, when the Cowboys released their initial depth chart last season, they didn’t exactly view Charvarius Ward as a future star, as he was buried deep on the depth chart.

So when fans go to look at the Bengals initial depth chart this year, again, rookie Jordan Brown finds himself in a very similar position. With Rashad Fenton, D’Montre Wade and Mark Fields the likely options currently on the roster, the Chiefs could certainly use to find additional depth at the position.

What do you think of this potential deal, Chiefs Kingdom? Yay or nay?
