The Kansas City Chiefs are getting cornerback help in the form of Morris Claiborne and this is a GREAT move by the organization.

The cornerback position needed to be addressed and the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t do all that much to upgrade it this offseason. They drafted South Carolina corner Rashad Fenton in the sixth round of the draft and also signed Bashaud Breeland to a one-year deal, but that was it.

Signing Morris Claiborne, a former first round pick in 2012, is a good move by the Chiefs. Here’s a guy who had two interceptions last year while notching 57 tackles and defended 14 passes through 15 games for the Jets.

Originally a Cowboy for the first five years of his career, Claiborne spent the last two years in New York as a Jet. He’ll be serving a four-game suspension to start the year due to violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Missing four games isn’t ideal, but this is still a good move by the Chiefs. Kansas City still has Kendall Fuller, Breeland, and Charvarius Ward as their likely starters, but Claiborne can definitely see the field once his suspension is over with in week five.

The low-risk on this signing is that the Chiefs are only paying Claiborne $1.5 million for this season, making him a very affordable player. He’ll be on a “prove it” contract and hopefully that inspires him to go out there and play the best football of his career in order to get a big contract for after the 2019 season.

The high-reward aspect comes from that same sentiment. Claiborne, 29, will be motivated to get a hefty payday after 2019, so he’ll definitely come out guns blazing (that’s the hope anyway). If he can help shore up the secondary, the Kansas City Chiefs will be tough to beat this year and that’s the goal in a year that many are hoping ends with a Super Bowl parade.

Even if Claiborne doesn’t pan out, then hey… The Chiefs only spent $1.5 million on him, so it’s not like it’s a lot of money going down the drain.

His suspension isn’t great, but that’s likely what kept him on the market for so long and the Chiefs benefitted from that in the end. They also have enough depth that they should be able to get through the first four games without him.
