This time two years ago, Kansas City Chiefs fans didn’t even know who Harrison Butker was. Now two years later, he’s known, but under appreciated. Here’s to you, ButtKicker.com.

In a time where a field goal can make or break your season, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chiefs faithful should be grateful that they have a badass kicker like Harrison Butker on their roster.

Two years ago, the Chiefs headed into the season with Cairo Santos as their kicker. Santos had been good for the franchise, but an eventual injury paved the way for then-rookie Harrison Butker to take center stage and he never relinquished that role.

Since taking over for Santos in week four of the 2017 season, Butker has gone on to be one of the Chiefs’ most under appreciated players. Yes, he’s a kicker and that tends to be how kickers in the NFL are treated, but it’s not fair.

We saw how a bad kicker took the Chicago Bears out of the playoffs last year (with the infamous doink-doink play in the Wild Card round last year). When that ball didn’t go in, it made me realize how lucky the Kansas City Chiefs are to have Butker taking the field whenever it’s time to go for an extra point or, more importantly, three points.

Butker was a seventh round pick by the Carolina Panthers two years ago, but never had an attempt for them in the regular season. He was placed on their practice squad where the Chiefs helped themselves as soon as Santos went down.

Butker has been in the red and white unis ever since.

While his numbers technically went down last year, he’s still been as solid of a kicker as there is in the NFL and that can’t go unnoticed. Butker notched a 90.5% field goal percentage while posting an 88.9% field goal percentage this past year.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs found the end zone more in 2018, which obviously gave Butker less chances, but that’s a good thing. He had 42 attempts in 2017, making 38 of them and only had 27 attempts this past year while connecting on 24 of them.

Butker was perfect on extra points as a rookie, but he missed four of them last year, which still gave him a very respectable 94.2% extra point percentage. That’s nothing to scoff at.

The Chiefs obviously trust Butker to be the same guy he’s been the last two years, as he’s currently the only kicker on the roster. Normally another kicker is brought in just for the hell of it, but not this summer. That’s an ode to Butker and how solid he’s been since taking over the kicking duties two years ago.

While KC Chiefs fans and football fans everywhere will focus solely on Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the rest of the offense this year (and they should), Harrison Butker will continue to go out there and step up to the plate when he’s called upon.
