The Kansas City Royals aren’t a good baseball team, but lost in the fold this year has been Jorge Soler, who is having himself a pretty respectable campaign in 2019.

While the Kansas City Royals were eliminated from any type of postseason race months ago, it hasn’t all been bad. Amongst the good this year has been Jorge Soler, who has not only stayed healthy this year, but is hitting the ball well and proving to be worth the trade the Royals made two years ago.

As you may remember, the Royals opted to send Wade Davis to the Cubs in exchange for Soler prior to the 2017 season. The deal initially looked like the Cubs won, but after Chicago failed to win the World Series with Davis in their pen, the Royals had the chance to win the trade.

What made the deal a good one for the Royals was that Soler was under club control through 2022 and offered a solution at designated hitter. His first season in Kansas City was a forgettable one, but Soler started to come into his own last year. That was until he injured himself in June and missed the duration of the 2018 season.

More from Kansas City Royals

This was an important year for Jorge Soler and he’s doing well four and a half months into the season. After Monday’s game against the Red Sox (another loss… Sigh), Soler is slashing .249/.329/.513 with 29 home runs and 75 RBI in 417 at bats.

The most impressive part about Soler’s season is that he can mash at the plate. That’s probably why the Royals were interested in bringing him to Kansas City even if they’ve never been much of a power team.

Well, with over a month left to go this season, Soler should be able to pass the Kansas City Royals all-time single season record for home runs (currently held by Mike Moustakas with 38). Hell, he could end up going for well over 40 homers, which would be a first.

Even though the Royals aren’t playing for anything other than pride at this point, it’s still nice to see Soler paying dividends for the organization. If nothing else, maybe Dayton Moore will trade him this winter and bring in a few more prospects that can help the Royals get back to contending in the coming years.

The current losing streak has been painful for fans to watch, but at least Soler is showing up and crushing home runs. He’s one of the most exciting players to watch on this team.
