Kansas City Chiefs: Fans need to get over Tony Gonzalez’s comments
Former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez is being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame this weekend. Don’t let his comments made at the Super Bowl make you think differently of him. He’s one of the all-time greats.
One of the best players in Kansas City Chiefs history is former tight end Tony Gonzalez, who spent 12 years with the franchise and will go down as arguably the greatest tight end of all-time.
Prior to this year’s Super Bowl, Chiefs Kingdom adored Gonzalez, but after he made some comments “dissing” the Chiefs, fans began to turn on him. From fans disowning him to ignoring his legacy as a Chief, it’s been a ridiculous turn of events amongst Chiefs Kingdom when it comes to Gonzalez.
All of this is really childish.

For those who don’t remember the extent of the comments, here you go,
"“You know what, Falcons, honestly, it made my career to come here. It really did. Nothing against Kansas City, I was there twelve years, but only three playoff games. But when I got to Atlanta it’s like all of a sudden you’re part of this winning organization or on TV every week. Now I’m doing Monday Night Football game, Sunday Night Football games. I love it here. I love being back here.”"
Yes, the comments Gonzalez made were pro-Falcons, but they weren’t anti-Chiefs or even inaccurate comments. The Chiefs were REALLY bad during a lot of Gonzalez’s time in Kansas City and it made perfect sense that he wanted to spend the last few years of his career with a team that gave him a legitimate shot to win a Super Bowl.
He wasn’t going to have that shot with the Chiefs, who were a dumpster fire in the 2000s and even the best players in the game don’t have long to win a championship.

Here’s a guy who spent over a decade with an organization who gave him quarterbacks like Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen to throw to him. They only gave him a legitimate quarterback for five years (talking, of course, about Trent Green).
Also – Let’s keep in mind that this year’s Super Bowl took place in Atlanta, so it shouldn’t have been shocking that he made those comments considering he was speaking with the Atlanta media. He’s not wrong about anything he said in the comments above. The Chiefs DID only go to three playoff games and they lost all three of them.
When Gonzalez was traded to Atlanta, the Falcons were a winning organization with high expectations. His five years there resulted in him finally getting a postseason victory and coming up just short of making it to the sport’s biggest game. Why shouldn’t those be some of his fondest memories from the league?
Looking back at Gonzalez’s career in Kansas City, he totaled up 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns throughout his 12 years as a Chief. He has the most receiving yards in franchise history and it’ll take a long time before anyone passes him for that honor.
Yet ever since those comments, Chiefs fans want to pretend like Gonzalez’s time as a Chief didn’t happen. That’s so stupid and childish and is not a good look for the fan base at all.
Tony Gonzalez is a class act. He didn’t insult the Chiefs or the fans with the comments yet here people are pretending like Chiefs fans are the victims here.
Whenever Gonzalez has been on FOX or CBS, he always speaks highly of the Chiefs and the Arrowhead atmosphere. The guy was even inducted into the Chiefs Ring of Honor this past year. I doubt he’d show up to that and be enthusiastic all night long if he didn’t care about the organization.
So please, drop this whole “Tony Gonzalez hates us” act. He’s allowed to love two teams and appreciate them for different reasons. Time to grow up and move on.
