No, the Kansas Jayhawks won’t go bowling in head coach Les Miles’ first season with the team, but the team will improve. This will be an exciting season for KU, and fans ultimately shouldn’t be disappointed with five wins.

As far as that November slate of games, even though I’ve got KU going 0-4, the first and fourth games are very winnable. Seeing Kansas finish 6-6 isn’t beyond the realm of imagination. Then again, I could just as easily see this squad losing to Boston College and West Virginia, too, dropping them to 3-9 (1-8).

More from Kansas Jayhawks

More will need to be done to get the Jayhawks to where Miles and Jeff Long want them to be. That’s where my bold proposal comes in.

Even though Long fired him years ago, he should strongly consider hiring former Louisville, Arkansas, Western Kentucky and Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino as the team’s next offensive coordinator.

Petrino has always had a way with offenses, even back in the days when he was offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. And by putting Petrino under Miles, Long shouldn’t have to worry about Petrino falling out of line.

Imagine what a duo those two would be. Miles has always been a great recruiter, and even if that suffers, Petrino will be able to get the most out of the offensive arsenal that Miles provides him. This move would boost the Jayhawks from a team under .500 for a dozen years to one with an outside shot at claiming a spot in the Big 12 championship game, a team to be taken seriously on a weekly basis.

Most importantly, it would turn the Kansas Jayhawks into a consistent winner, a program that once again becomes a destination hire for young-and-upcoming head coaches when it comes time to replace the 65-year-old Miles.
