Football season is almost here and for the Kansas City Chiefs, there’s one player who isn’t being talked about nearly enough who could make the 53-man roster. That player is Mark Fields.

With the 2019-2020 NFL season opening up soon, there are players who many fans and analysts may overlook coming into the offseason. These are the kinds of players that General Managers take heavy pride in hitting on. This year I have one player in mind who I believe could make a heavy impact in a much-needed position on this Kansas City Chiefs roster.

For those of you who haven’t already guessed, I’m talking about the cornerback position.

Last season one of the biggest complaints was the Chiefs defense in general, but mostly coming from the cornerback position. After trading away talented/emotional corner Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City was lacking depth at the position.

Throughout camp and during the season, KC brought in and moved out different players looking for the right talent and combination of players to fix this problem including a blockbuster trade that sent starting quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins for talented corner Kendall Fuller.

Other well-known players the Chiefs brought in to play opposite Fuller:

This upcoming season has been no different in the search for skilled players at the cornerback position. The Chiefs have brought in and signed veteran Brashaud Breeland (former Redskin and Packer) as well as Alliance of American Football stand out Keith Reaser.

Both players are familiar with Kansas City already

  • Breeland was brought in last season for over a week before he left without a contract and ended up signing with the Green Bay Packers for the year.
  • Reaser, on the other hand, was on and off with the Chiefs in the 2017 season before he was injured early in the season and was released with an injury settlement.

Coming into camp, there are a lot of unfamiliar faces and many unknown players that fans do not know much about. This year I have chosen one player in particular that will find his way onto the field and have a chance to make a name for himself. This guy goes by the name of Mark Fields.

Fields is a 22-year-old rookie cornerback coming out of Clemson University. His profile reads as 5 foot 10 inches and weighs in at 192 pounds. He was signed onto the Chiefs squad as an undrafted free agent. As an athletic corner, Fields clocked in a 4.37 40 at this year’s NFL combine.

Coming out of college, Fields has started or appeared in over 25 games including the National title game in 2018 which he had two pass deflections. Having less than ideal numbers on paper throughout his college career, his in your face physicality and coverage are the part of his game that could translate him into the NFL. He may project as a slot corner with his speed and abilities, but look for him to make a splash this off-season and find himself a spot on the final roster.

Fields is one of many players looking to make his presence felt this offseason for the Chiefs. Although he is not a lock, expect him to remain on the roster whether it be the final 53 or practice squad.

With other players that are close to cracking the roster, Fields is one that should sneak into the final open spots on this team. Keep an eye open for this player over the next couple months and see if you think he is worthy of locking down some of the NFL top players!
