KC Chiefs: Chris Jones snubbed with way-too-low Madden 20 rating
By Shade Piper
Chris Jones of the KC Chiefs received an 89 overall rating when Madden released their ratings on Monday. This might look like a good rating, but there are five defensive tackles ranked higher than him and that’s where the problem is.
Chris Jones was one of the biggest Pro Bowl snubs last year and now he is being snubbed yet again with his low Madden rating. Let’s not forget that this is the same dude who finished third in sacks last season with 15.5 and holds an NFL record for most consecutive games with at least one sack.
The five players ranked ahead of Jones are Fletcher Cox (10.5 sacks), Damon Harrison (3.5 sacks), Michael Pierce (0 sacks), Geno Atkins (10 sacks), and Kenny Clark (6 sacks). Sacks aren’t everything, but it is a huge piece of a defensive lineman’s job and none of these guys come close to Jones in that category.
In looking at their game as a whole none of the other five players listed here had a season like Jones did last season. In Chris Wesseling’s top ten defensive player of the year candidates, Chris Jones ranked sixth, none of these other five made the top ten.
In PFF’s NFL’s 50 Best Players, only Cox ranked higher than Jones and in Pete Prisco’s Top 100 NFL Players for 2019, Only Atkins and Cox rank higher than Jones. This list could go on and on. Jones should be a top-three defensive tackle at the absolute minimum.
This is my absolute favorite reason why Chris Jones is rated too low. Jones himself thinks Madden has him rated too low and I love that. Jones knows what he has done and what he can do and is tired of his work going unnoticed.
It would be of no surprise to most of Chiefs Kingdom to see Jones finish this season as the top-ranked defensive tackle in the NFL. Here are the full numbers behind his initial Madden rating:
Overall: 89
