KC Chiefs: Ranking every backup quarterback situation in AFC West
The KC Chiefs might not have the best backup quarterback situation, but they have the best STARTING quarterback situation and that’s definitely more important.
Backup quarterbacks are important because they can make or break your season should the starter go down for any reason. We’ve seen this to be true in years past when guys like Aaron Rodgers or Andrew Luck had to miss time, their offenses struggled and were completely different teams as a result.

Sometimes it works out well though, where a team can strangely win the Super Bowl with a backup quarterback in the game (see the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles).
The Chiefs had Chase Daniel as their backup for three years and he ended up having to make two starts during his time in Kansas City. One of those wins was pivotal, as it kept the Chargers out of the playoffs.
It was more important for the Chiefs to have a decent backup when they had Alex Smith because he was older and more susceptible to injuries (although he stayed relatively healthy during his Chiefs tenure).
Patrick Mahomes will turn 24 in the middle of September and set the world on fire in 2018. There won’t be a backup that can provide what he can, but there were backups that could provide similar to what Smith would.
