The KC Royals have two pitchers representing them in the Futures Game next week in Cleveland. Those two are Brady Singer and Kris Bubic, both drafted by the Royals in the 2018 MLB Draft.

It looks like drafting college pitchers has paid off for the Kansas City Royals, at least one year removed, that is. In last year’s draft, the Royals took Brady Singer 18th overall and then followed up that selection with Jackson Kowar, Daniel Lynch, and Kris Bubic. Jonathan Bowlan was taken in the second round.

It’s not surprising that Singer has been off to a heck of a start considering he was the ace of the Florida Gators staff (a program who is always in the running to make the College World Series), but the most pleasant surprise in 2019 has been former Stanford pitcher Kris Bubic.

Singer was announced as the Royals’ representative for the Future’s Game next week, but recently it was announced that Kris Bubic would be joining him there. This is very exciting for Royals fans!

Bubic was added to the roster after Brendan McKay, the Rays’ top prospect, was called up to the big leagues. I recently wrote an article on Bubic where I urged fans to keep an eye on him because the kid has been killing it in the minor leagues.

Bubic started the season in Lexington, but recently was promoted to Wilmington where he’s posting a 3.89 ERA in seven starts (37 innings pitched). His recent outing, which came on July 1st, saw him go 5.1 innings while surrendering three earned runs and also struck out eight and walked just one batter.

Yes, Bubic has been good, but Singer was an original member of the Future’s Game. He was wheeling and dealing in Wilmington and while he’s hit a bit of a bump in Northwest Arkansas, he’s still worthy of the spot in the big game. He dominated the Springfield Cardinals earlier this week, throwing six innings of one run ball and showing why he was a first round pick last year.

Drafting five straight college pitchers to kick off last year’s MLB Draft was a bold strategy and so far, all five of those pitchers are doing well in the Royals farm system. It’d be REALLY cool if they could make up the future Royals rotation, but that’s unlikely. Plus, it’s still way too early to get excited about anything.

For now, let’s just enjoy that Brady Singer and Kris Bubic are throwing fire on the mound.
