The Kansas City Royals have some potential stars in the making in their minor league system, but one who isn’t getting nearly enough praise is Kris Bubic, who is currently a member of the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

The Kansas City Royals selected Kris Bubic with the 40th pick in the 2018 MLB Draft and he was the fourth straight college pitcher that they took in that draft. Bubic pitched at Stanford during his college years and has been sensational for both of the Royals minor league teams he’s pitched for in 2018.

Bubic started the year in Lexington, posting a tremendous 2.08 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 4-1 record through 47.2 innings. He did so well during his time in A-ball, that he was quickly promoted to high-A ball in Wilmington, where he’s continuing his dominance.

Through five starts with the Blue Rocks, Bubic has a 3.90 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 1-1 record in 27.2 innings pitched. The numbers aren’t nearly as incredible as they were in Lexington, but that was to be expected. He’s still doing very well and very well could reach the Double-A level before we know it.

When looking at those first five pitchers taken in the 2018 draft class, they’re all doing well so far and that’s a beautiful sight for Royals fans.

More from Kansas City Royals

Brady Singer, Jackson Kowar, and Daniel Lynch all started the year in Wilmington together and Bubic joined them a few weeks ago. Not long after, Singer was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Kowar recently joined his college teammate with a promotion of his own. Jonathan Bowlan, the fifth straight college pitcher taken last year, soon joined Bubic and Lynch in Wilmington.

To sum up, these five picks are all making their way up the minor league ladder quicker than anyone of us had hoped for. Bubic in particular has been a fun player to watch and it’d be awesome if he could continue this production and get promoted a few more times this season, though once is probably the likeliest scenario.

Bubic has caught the attention of the higher ups, earning the award for Midseason Player of the Year for the Royals farm system. He’s shown that he can perform at a high level, pitching a six inning shutout last Thursday (see tweet above).

While a lot of the discussion is going to surround Singer and Kowar, Kris Bubic deserves more attention. The guy has been phenomenal in only his second year on a minor league mound.

Hopefully the Stanford product continues to churn out quality starts and maybe Royals fans get to see him at the K as early as 2020.
