Former Kansas City Royals designated hitter Kendrys Morales was recently designated for assignment by the New York Yankees. There is no need for the Royals to reunite with Morales.

When looking back at the 2015 World Series season, it’s hard to imagine the Kansas City Royals get to that pinnacle without the hitting prowess of their designated hitter Kendrys Morales. The Royals had brought Morales in to replace Billy Butler, who left for Oakland after the 2014 campaign.

The move was met with mixed reviews, but ultimately, it paid off. Morales was phenomenal both during the regular season and the postseason in 2015 and it led to a World Series title for the organization.

Morales had a bit of a down year in 2016 and it became obvious that the Royals wouldn’t be re-signing him after that. He went on to ink a three-year deal with the Blue Jays and only got through two of those years before landing with the Athletics and later, the Yankees, where he wasn’t a member there for long.

Well, the Yankees recently designated Morales for assignment, meaning he could become available to land with another team. No, the Royals should not be that team and I’ll tell you why.

More from Kansas City Royals

First and foremost, there’s a reason Morales has been let go by two teams this year. He’s slashing .194/.313/.253 between his time with the Athletics and the Yankees and only hit two home runs during that time. For a guy whose main job is to hit for power, he hasn’t been doing that much in 2019.

The second reason the Royals need to avoid this reunion is that they’re rebuilding and don’t need to bring in another veteran who could potentially take away at bats from future stars.

The Royals might not have an every day designated hitter, but they at least have a slew of options they can put in that spot each day. They don’t need Morales taking playing time from any of those younger options who could be a part of the contending teams.

While Kansas City Royals fans should always be grateful to Kendrys Morales and what he did during his brief time as a Royal, there’s no need to get sentimental and scoop him up for the duration of the 2019 season.

What the Royals need to focus on is getting the younger guys playing time and making sure the next wave is developing in the minor leagues. They also need to grab some prospects via trades at the deadline and make sure they’re getting things turned around over the next few years.
